No holiday celebrations? What do you do instead?
written by Nikki Hatcher
A December without holidays sounds impossible for many people. With Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa filling the month, it may seem difficult to escape the bombastic decorations, music, and community parades. There are families of various cultural and religious backgrounds that do not celebrate holidays and choose not to string lights, deck our halls, or go caroling. Here are 5 alternatives that keep our family connected to each other and during this time for family, refreshment, and love.
- Family Gatherings
When so many family members travel so far to be together at the same time, schedule a family gathering, i.e., fami-ly game or trivia night on a “non-holiday” day so that everyone can still meet and greet distant family members and share in strengthening the bonds of love. - Take Advantage of the Weather
Let it snow! Take advantage of the cold and snow and get out in it. Get a snow workout, go sledding, build a snowman or woman, have snowball fights too, starting an outdoor fire or similar activities can make winter more enjoyable for all. - Enjoy Yummy Seasonal Treats
After you start your outdoor fire, roast some chestnuts, make smores, campfire churros or campfire doughnuts. These quick, easy-to-make, and tasty treats are sure to become family favorites and may start a new tradition. - Volunteer
Any time of the year is a great time to volunteer in the local community. During the holiday season, many people have a reduced or relaxed work schedule and it is a perfect opportunity to help elderly Ms. Grisham shovel the snow from her driveway, or volunteer at a local soup kitchen, homeless shelter or children’s home. Giving is not seasonal and we should avail ourselves of these opportunities year-round. - Travel Locally
If you’ve had your eye on a local museum, art gallery or other tourist attraction, December is a great time to visit since most people will be consumed with holiday shopping and festivities. Smaller crowds should make these ven-ues a little more enjoyable
Whether you celebrate holidays or not, these five options and many more are at every family’s disposal. No matter what anyone celebrates (or not), everyone deserves to spend their break doing things they love with the people they love.
